Hydrate the Nation

We believe that staying properly hydrated is essential for overall health and well-being. That’s why we’re passionate about spreading awareness and providing valuable information on the importance of hydration and the role of electrolytes.

Hydration for active lifestyle

Hydrate for optimal physical & mental function

Whether you’re a professional athlete, a weekend warrior, or simply someone who enjoys staying active, the role of hydration in sports performance cannot be overstated. Proper hydration is essential for maintaining optimal physical and mental function, as well as maximising athletic potential.

Hydration for sports performance

Hydrate for peak performance

Staying hydrated is crucial for sports performance, with amazing health benefits. Adequate hydration helps regulate the body’s temperature, optimising the body’s cooling process during exercise, while reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Proper hydration supports joint lubrication, which reduces the risk of injuries and promotes mobility and flexibility.

Dehydration isn’t serious, it just means you’re thirsty!

Feeling thirsty? You’re already on your way to dehydration, which can leave you feeling tired and dizzy and cause a dry mouth. Dehydration is considered a dangerous loss of fluids either through inadequate water intake, sweat or illness. During the summer, its especially important to drink water often as heat illness can be severe and life threatening.

There’s no such thing as drinking too much water!

Ever heard you can have too much of a good thing? It’s true with water consumption too. Too much water intake – you’ll know if your urine is completely clear – can lead to the depletion of essential electrolytes which can leave the body seriously depleted.

Clear Urine is a good hydration indicator!

As mentioned previously, when it comes to excessive water, urine is a good indicator pf hydration status. But clear urine can be a sign your drinking far more water than your body needs and in turn depleting you of essential electrolytes.

We remain sensitive to the water balance in our blood system and are well equipped at replacing any daily fluids lost through bodily functions, including:

Excretion

EXCRETION

A person can lose a pint to several gallons of urine a day.

Breathing

BREATHING

When we inhale, moisture is added to the air as it passes to our lungs. The humidified air is then lost once we exhale.

Sweating

SWEATING

We lose under a litre of water daily when it evaporates from the skin, per the Merck Manuals. This amount can increase dramatically when we sweat profusely due to vigorous physical activity or elevated body temperature.

Digestion

DIGESTION

Generally, we lose little water through the digestive tract. However, in the case of severe diarrhea and vomiting, a gallon or more can be lost.

To avoid dehydration in any form, water consumption should continuously balance water loss. When the body suffers from a water deficiency, the lymphatic system — which helps maintain fluid balance— will ensure that only essential cells stay hydrated at the cost of damage to less important ones. This inevitably causes the body to perform less efficiently.   As mild to severe dehydration starts to set in, individuals can expect symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, lack of focus, dizziness and fainting.

Everyone needs just 8 glasses of water a day!

Not so, there’s actually no solid research that says 8 is the exact number of h20 glasses an individual needs to drink every day. It actually depends on a variety of factors, experts say. Those factors include your climate, physical activity, and other factors like breastfeeding that may require more water intake.

Hydration is just about water intake!

There’s more to drinking water than just getting enough of it daily. This is especially important for very active individuals and athletes to remember. Consuming drinks with electrolytes, like a True Sports hydration drink or coconut water, can keep you better hydrated during intense workout sessions.

You can only hydrate with water!

Luckily, you can get essential fluids from both water and your food. This can be especially good news for those who don’t love downing water as much as they should. Foods with high water content include melons, courgettes, celery, tomatoes and spinach.

Constipation

Dehydration Dangers

You could quickly become constipated as your colon steals water from your stool to keep your digestive system moving. Urine will become darker; prolonged dehydration can also crystallise salts and minerals in urine, possibly leading to the formation of painful kidney stones.

Not hunger

Dehydration vs Hunger

Because dehydration can often be mistaken for hunger, you might gain weight as you try to satisfy your body’s needs. Fortunately, the opposite is also true if you’re hydrated.

Headaches

Dehydration and the Mind

If you suffer from migraines, studies show that a lack of fluids might easily trigger an episode. Headaches are also likely to last longer if you’re low on fluids. In addition, dehydration can leave you unable to concentrate, cause short-term memory problems and leave you feeling moody and anxious.
